Young Life - Southern California High School Campus ministries
Wynn Thompson - A source of hope for those seeking help with relational problems, such as abusive relationships, addictive behaviors and unwanted homosexuality.
It was a sad day when our Congress declared that there would be no prayer in school, thus extracting God from the fabric of our education. Since that day we as believers have striven to once again include Him in our public schools. There are "clubs" of believers that hold lunchtime Bible studies. Unfortunately, most are sparsely attended. Perhaps it is the word BIBLE that scares students off, or quite possibly the word STUDY. Either way the students are not being ministered to.
Young Life is an organization that attempts to solve this problem. When the students are reluctant to come to church, we go to them. Teams of Young Life leaders swarm high school campuses at lunch to meet, greet, and hangout with teens. With each bond created an invitation is given to attend what we Young Lifers call "CLUB". One night a week YL leaders prepare and lead what some would consider your average church youth service. Except it is not held in a church building. There is singing, games, snacks, and a short evangelistic Bible study and closing prayer. Young Life has found an effective way to bring God back into school, and provide after-hours activities for high school students.
Crossroads Community Church supports that Santa Ana, CA branch of YL, a new and rapidly growing CLUB. The first CLUB meeting was held in April, 2002 with an impressive turn out of 25 students. Since then, CLUB has continued with many different activities. Camp was held in July. After camp, the Santa Ana YL directors, Gerardo and Tracey Magana, began follow-up Bible Studies. Tracey holds one for the girls, and Gerardo holds one for the guys. The turn-out has been tremendous, so much so that Tracey states they are in need of starting additional Bible Studies, which Kristy Gonzales (a YL volunteer) and Amanda Peavy, a member of Crossroads, will be in charge of once they return to college from summer break.
For more information you can email Amanda Peavy or Gerardo. You can also check out the Young Life website.
